Reference Size Guide Four categories

Picking a size.

Our four standard sizes, with dimensions, best placements, and how they wear. Size matters more than you'd think — the same design can work at Small on a wrist and fall flat at Large on an upper arm. Pick the right one.

Matching size to placement

The rule we use internally: the tattoo should match the space, not compete with it. A Small design on a full upper arm disappears; a Large design on a wrist overpowers the hand. Here's how we typically match:

Small placements

Inner wrist — Small works best. Medium starts to feel crowded against the hand.

Behind ear / behind neck — Small only. These are intimate placements where subtlety is the whole point.

Fingers / knuckles — Small. And only ever Small. Fingers are short-lived anyway (3–5 days), so keep it simple.

Ankle — Small or Medium, depending on the design. Minimal work suits Small; bolder pieces work at Medium.

Medium placements

Forearm — Medium is the sweet spot for most pieces. Large works too for statement work, but Medium is more versatile.

Collarbone — Small for script, Medium for decorative. The flat horizontal surface reads well at either size.

Shoulder blade — Medium reads as contained; Large can start to look like you're trying too hard.

Calf — Medium or Large. The muscle shape handles both well.

Large placements

Upper arm — Large. The flat expanse of the upper arm swallows Small designs.

Thigh — Large or Statement. Most thigh pieces benefit from taking up real estate.

Upper back — Large or Statement. Back pieces are meant to be seen as a full composition.

Ribcage — Medium or Large. Depends on how long the design is — horizontal pieces can extend to Large, vertical stays at Medium.

Ruler test (use this before you order)

Before you commit to a size, do this: hold a ruler against your intended placement and mark off the actual dimensions. A "5 cm design" on paper can feel very different on your body. This five-second check prevents about 80% of size regret.

A note about custom sizes

Every ready-made design in our collection comes at a fixed size. For custom commissions, you pick the size yourself — tell us either the exact dimensions you want, or the placement and we'll recommend a size. See Custom Commissions.

A note about cm vs inches

We list dimensions in both cm and inches throughout the site because placement visualisation is easier when the units match the tape measure you have nearby. The conversions we use: 2 cm ≈ 0.8 in · 5 cm ≈ 2 in · 10 cm ≈ 4 in · 15 cm ≈ 6 in.
