Everything you need to know from the moment your parcel arrives to the moment the last trace of ink fades off. No steps skipped. No fine print hidden.

01 / What's in the box

Open the parcel

Packed at our Delhi studio

Each order ships in a black kraft envelope with a foil-stamped ANNA·Z·TATTO mark. Inside, your tattoos and materials sit between two cream-coloured protective sheets. Here's what you'll find:

In every order:

What you'll need from home: a pair of clean scissors, access to tap water, a small clean cloth or sponge, and a few minutes of uninterrupted time. You don't need alcohol swabs, moisturiser, or any specialised tools. Everything else is in the envelope.

02 / Before you apply

Preparation matters

5 minutes of prep · Makes a real difference

Application is fast, but what you do in the five minutes before you apply is what decides whether the tattoo lasts 5 days or 15. Here's the pre-check:

Skin checklist

Apply to skin that is clean, completely dry, hair-free, and not freshly moisturised. Avoid areas that are broken, sunburnt, freshly shaved-raw, tattooed (permanently) within the last month, or actively flaring with eczema or dermatitis.

What to avoid on the skin right before application

Patch test (strongly recommended)

If this is your first ANNA Z tattoo, or you have a history of skin reactions to adhesives or cosmetics, please do a patch test. Use the small test square included in your order. Apply it to the inside of your wrist following the normal steps below, then wait 24 hours. If you see redness, itching, bumps, or swelling at any point, do not proceed to full application. Contact us — we'll refund or replace.

Choose your placement wisely

Where you place the tattoo affects both how it looks and how long it lasts. See our placement guide below. In general: flat skin > curved skin, less friction > more friction, drier areas > oilier areas.

03 / Placement

Where to put it

Expected lifespan by body area
Upper arm / shoulder
Lasts 10–14 days

Best overall — flat, low-friction, rarely washed with soap. Most tattoos last the full 14 days here. Excellent for larger pieces.

Upper back / shoulder blade
Lasts 10–14 days

Same as upper arm. Works well for statement pieces since the skin is flat and uninterrupted. You'll need help applying.

Forearm
Lasts 8–12 days

Our most popular placement. Good visibility, flat surface, moderate wear. Shorter sleeves and frequent hand-washing slightly reduce lifespan.

Collarbone / sternum
Lasts 8–12 days

Looks elegant for script and minimal work. Avoid if you exercise in a sports bra or backpack that rubs the area.

Thigh
Lasts 9–13 days

Great for larger designs. Avoid areas that rub against denim seams. Lasts longer in warmer months when you're wearing shorts/dresses.

Calf / ankle
Lasts 8–11 days

Solid placement. Calf lasts longer than ankle due to less friction from socks and shoes. Avoid the inner ankle bone — the curvature makes application tricky.

Inner wrist
Lasts 6–10 days

High visibility. Fades faster because you wash and rest your wrists on everything. Best for small, minimal pieces.

Back of neck / nape
Lasts 7–11 days

Subtle placement. Shampoo and hair friction shorten life. Tie hair up for the first 2 hours after applying.

Behind the ear
Lasts 5–9 days

Delicate spot. The curvature is difficult to apply over — go small. Oil from hair and skincare shortens lifespan significantly.

Fingers / knuckles
Lasts 3–5 days

Shortest lifespan by far. Hand-washing, typing, gripping, everything rubs it. Great for special occasions and photos, not for weeks of wear.

Hands / wrist top
Lasts 4–7 days

Visible and expressive, but washes away quickly. Consider it a one-week piece. Avoid if you do a lot of wet work.

Feet / toes
Lasts 4–6 days

Shoes and socks create constant friction. Best for a day at the beach or event photography — not for long wear.

04 / Application

Six steps, two minutes

Read once, apply once
01

Cut out the design

Use clean scissors to cut around your chosen design, keeping about 2–3mm of clear film margin around the artwork. Don't cut into the art itself. If the sheet has multiple designs, only cut out the one you're using — leave the others sealed for later.

Time: 30 seconds · Tools: scissors
02

Prep the skin

Wash the area with plain soap and water. Rinse thoroughly. Pat dry with a clean towel and wait 2 minutes so any moisture fully evaporates. The skin must be completely dry and free of any oil, lotion, or sunscreen.

Time: 2 minutes · No moisturiser
03

Peel off the top film

Your tattoo has three layers: a thick paper backing, the design itself, and a clear protective top film. Peel off the clear top film only, starting from a corner. The design now sits exposed on the paper backing, sticky side up.

Do not peel the paper backing yet
04

Place design on skin

Position the tattoo face-down on your skin — so the inked side touches your skin and the paper backing faces upward. Press it down gently with your fingers so the whole design makes flat contact. Once it's positioned, don't reposition — the adhesive grabs quickly.

Design faces the skin, paper faces up
05

Press wet cloth for 30 seconds

Take your pre-moistened cotton wipe (or a clean damp cloth from home), and press it firmly against the paper backing. Keep it pressed for 30 full seconds — count it out. The paper should become fully saturated and translucent. If the paper still looks dry at any edge, add more water and keep pressing.

30 seconds · Paper must be fully wet
06

Peel slowly, let it cure

Starting from one corner, slowly peel the paper backing off. Go slowly — the design should stay on your skin. If you see any part of the ink lifting with the paper, press it back down with the wet cloth for another 15 seconds and try again. Once off, let the skin air-dry and do not touch, water, or cover for at least 1–2 hours while the ink sets into the skin.

Curing time: 1–2 hours · Leave dry
And then —

The ink starts light grey and darkens to a deep blue-black over 24 hours as it reacts with amino acids in your skin. Day 3 is peak colour. Day 7 it's still rich. Day 10 it softens. Day 14 it's gone. No scrubbing required — your skin handles the rest on its own.

05 / Aftercare

To make it last

The 14-day playbook

Do

  • Let it air-dry for 1–2 hoursRight after application, resist the urge to touch, cover, or wash the area. The ink needs this window to bond into the skin.
  • Pat — don't rub — after showersUse a soft towel. Press water away rather than dragging the towel across the tattoo.
  • Apply sunscreen after 24 hoursUV fades the ink faster. Once set, apply SPF 30+ if the area is sun-exposed.
  • Sleep on soft fabrics night oneCotton T-shirts, silk pillows. Avoid wool or rough synthetics that might rub against the new ink.
  • Wear loose clothing over itEspecially the first night. Tight elastic waistbands or bra straps rubbing against the tattoo halve its life.
  • Let it fade on its ownDon't try to refresh or retouch. It's designed to fade gracefully — interference usually makes it worse.

Don't

  • Don't apply to broken skinCuts, rashes, or freshly-shaved raw areas. Wait for the skin to heal fully before applying.
  • Don't swim or sauna for 2 hoursThe ink needs time to fully cure. After that, occasional swimming is fine, but regular pool time shortens lifespan.
  • Don't use exfoliants or retinolFace scrubs, AHA/BHA serums, retinol cream, clay masks — all speed up skin cell turnover, which is exactly what fades the tattoo.
  • Don't use oil-based products on itCoconut oil, body oil, cleansing oil, makeup remover oil — these break down the ink. Use water-based moisturisers nearby if needed.
  • Don't scrub the areaFace cloths, loofahs, body scrubs — anything abrasive. Gentle soap and your hand is all it needs.
  • Don't apply deodorant over itIf placed on underarm or near it — aluminium-based antiperspirants accelerate fading.
!

If you notice anything unusual

Redness, itching, swelling, or bumps that appear within the first 24 hours are a sign of skin sensitivity to our adhesive or pigment. This is rare, but it can happen.

Immediate action: Remove the tattoo with oil-based makeup remover or micellar water. Wash the area with mild soap and cool water. Apply a cool compress for 10–15 minutes. If the reaction persists beyond 24 hours, consult a doctor or dermatologist.

Then contact us at support@annaztatto.shop within 48 hours. We will issue a full refund, cover any pharmacy/doctor costs incurred, and remove the batch from inventory.

06 / Lifespan

What to expect day by day

From application to fully faded
Hour 1–2

Curing

Ink is light grey. Skin may feel slightly sticky. Leave the area dry and uncovered. Do not wash or touch.

Hour 2–24

Darkening

The ink visibly darkens from light grey to a deep blue-black as it reacts with your skin. Normal showering is fine now.

Day 2–3

Fully developed

Peak colour and definition. This is the window when the tattoo looks most like a permanent piece. Most photos happen here.

Day 4–7

Full bloom

Rich colour holds. Edges remain crisp. A perfect week-long wear for events, travel, or just trying a placement before committing permanently.

Day 8–10

Softening

Colour begins to lighten. Sharp edges soften first — especially in high-friction areas. Still clearly visible and legible.

Day 11–13

Graceful fade

The design appears ghostly and faded. Still there, but clearly on its way out. Some parts may be gone entirely, others still visible.

Day 14+

Clean skin

Fully gone. No residue, no mark, no memory on the skin. Ready for the next one — or not. Your call.

07 / Early removal

If you want it gone sooner

Three methods, fastest to gentlest

Method 1 — Fast (2 minutes)

Apply oil-based makeup remover or micellar water to a cotton pad. Press onto the tattoo for 30 seconds to let the oil dissolve the ink, then rub gently in circles. Repeat 2–3 times. Wash the area with mild soap. Most of the tattoo will be gone; any faint remnant fades within 24 hours. Best for urgent removal.

Method 2 — Gentle (10–15 minutes)

Soak the area in warm water for 5 minutes to loosen the top layer of skin. Apply a mild exfoliating scrub or sugar + honey mixture in circular motions for 2 minutes. Rinse. Repeat once if needed. Moisturise afterward. Best for sensitive skin.

Method 3 — Natural (2–3 days)

Simply shower normally using a washcloth with a bit more pressure than usual over the tattoo. Let the tattoo fade 2–3x faster than it naturally would. Best if you're not in a hurry.

Note: Do not use acetone, nail polish remover, alcohol, or strong chemical solvents. These can irritate the skin without actually removing the tattoo faster than oil would.

08 / Troubleshooting

If something goes wrong

10 common issues and fixes

The ink didn't transfer fully — parts are missing

Most likely cause: the paper backing wasn't wet enough, or wasn't pressed long enough. Immediately press a wet cloth over the design for another 20 seconds with firm pressure. If that doesn't work, the tattoo may have partially transferred before you lifted the paper — remove what's there with oil-based remover and apply a fresh one. Contact us for a replacement under our application-failure guarantee.

The design came off when I peeled the paper

This happens if the skin was oily, moisturised, or not fully dry when you applied it. Also common if you peeled the paper backing too fast. Remove any residue, wash and dry the area, wait 10 minutes, and try the second tattoo if you have one. If this was your only one, email us — we cover first-application failures for free.

The ink is lighter than expected

Give it 24 hours. Our ink starts light grey and darkens significantly over the first day as it reacts with your skin. If it's still too light after 24 hours, it may not have transferred fully — see the "ink didn't transfer fully" item above.

It's darker than expected

Not a defect — the final colour depends on your skin's pH and amino acid profile, which varies person-to-person. On some skin, the ink develops a very deep blue-black; on others, it settles into a slate-grey. Both are correct. The colour evens out as fading begins.

It's fading much faster than 2 weeks

Usually one of: (a) placed on a high-friction area like fingers or wrist — see our placement guide; (b) frequent contact with oil-based products; (c) very oily skin, which shortens lifespan by 2–3 days typically; (d) heavy exercise, swimming, or hot yoga. If you placed it on the upper arm and it still faded in under 5 days, contact us — we replace defective batches.

My skin is itching where the tattoo is

Mild, brief itching (a few minutes during curing) is normal — it's the adhesive releasing. Persistent itching, especially with redness, is a sensitivity reaction. Remove the tattoo immediately with oil remover, apply a cool compress, and contact us. We refund, replace, and cover any medical expenses.

The edges are peeling up

Happens if the edges weren't fully adhered, or if the area rubs against clothing. Gently press the edges back down with a damp cloth for 10–15 seconds. If they keep lifting, the tattoo is near the end of its life — most peeling starts 2–3 days before full fade.

It looks blurry

This happens if the design was smudged during the paper-peeling step, or if you moved the cloth while pressing. Nothing to do once it's done — it will fade naturally. For your next one, press straight down without sliding the cloth sideways.

Can I reapply over a faded one?

Yes — once the old one is fully gone (at least day 14, or after oil-remover cleaning). Wait 24 hours for your skin to settle. Don't apply over a still-fading tattoo, as the old ink may interfere with new adhesion.
